transitional jobs program

About Our Cause

In order for at-risk youth to become self-sufficient, it is necessary for them to obtain and maintain a job. Unfortunately, most of these youth face myriad challenges to employment, including:

  • Incomplete education
  • Lack of work experience and references
  • Unclear career direction
  • Criminal records
  • Unstable housing

The Blue Sky Employment Program provides homeless and at-risk youth with twelve weeks of paid, supportive employment at Blue Sky Bakery & Café. Youth gain valuable experience in cooking, baking, maintaining a sanitary work environment, delivering catering orders, customer service and cash-handling.

Youth meet each week with our Case Manager to address issues such as professional communication, time management, conflict resolution, and diversity.   They also receive assistance updating their resumes, practicing interview skills and seeking long-term employment.

Eligible youth (16-24 years old) can apply for our transitional jobs program by coming to the cafe on Tuesdays from 11 am - 1 pm, or Thursdays from 1 pm - 3 pm to complete an application and meet with our Case Manager, Betsy Kelly.

How to Help

Our program doesn’t end after twelve weeks.  When youth successfully complete the program at the bakery, we work with them to secure stable, long-term employment. If your company has entry-level job or internship openings, please consider hiring one of our amazing graduates. If you would like to discuss this opportunity, please email Betsy Kelly.
